Week 5

1. I think the cause of the great number of casualties was due to the fact it was their first World War. The weapons weren't the best, and a lot of the strategies were new, sadly sometimes resulting in men on the same "team" killing each other along the way. The video opens with saying (0:20)"The Turkish Army prepared to defend its home land, Britain and her allies prepared to end a world war..."(0:31) giving a sense that right from the start "Britain and her allies" were at a loss going into unknown land. The video also calls serving a "Duty"(1:12) as in the men had to fight, meaning that not everyone had a sufficient amount of training. I also cant imagine fighting on beaches makes anything easier. Sand is hard to run on and most of it is soft flat land making shelter harder to find.
I think the impact it had on society was tremendous. I don't think anyone really ever imagined how many deaths would come of World War 1 the same way I don't think anyone would of guessed that's the name it would be given. I think that when people grasped how many casualties there was it left the nation with knot in their throat. And i think it brought the nation closer, and thinking of how to try and prevent the amount of casualties ever being so high.

3. I think some of the frustrations soldiers encountered having just one line of communication were that there was no direct answer and no sure way of knowing if the intended people even got the letter. When I miss somebody I tend to want to hear their voice or see their face, you don't get that trough a letter the way you do when you Skype or call someone. And the reason I use Facebook or text is to have a conversation with many people at one time with the choice of making it private or not. You dont get that option with letters. I imagine another frustration would be that writing letters while at war felt more like talking to yourself then having a conversation.
