I am an African American
I wonder what lies ahead for Us
I hear their hurtful comments but don't respond
I see enraged faces
I want to no longer wait for my dream to be the reality
I am an African America
I pretend I'm not sacred
I feel pain, physically and emotionally
I need respect
I worry for the future generations
I cry a silent cry
I am an African American
I don't understand why we are hated so
I believe We are fighting for a worthy cause that Will effect change
I dream of equality
I try to not feel anger
I hope our voices will be heard
I am an African American

Week 04 (part 1)
I believe that Martin Luther King Jr.'s methodology was more effective in accomplishing goals set by the Civil Rights Movement. At the commence both Malcolm X and MLK had different ways of handling problems. To me the over all goal of the Civil Rights Movement was to achieve equality by ending end segregation. At first I feel like Malcolm X didn't have that goal in mind. Malcolm X was more for an advocate for black supremacy. From what we talked about in class it wasn't until his trip to Mecca that he became pro equality. Malcolm X was a very smart man and tactful but way more violent before Mecca. On the other hand, MLK from the start wanted equality. Although giving a hug to the one that kicks you down may be difficult, from personal experience it works very well in helping you reach the goal in a bigger picture.
I feel like MLK rarely let the pro-segregationist have a win, big or small. While X let them have that small victory by fighting back with violence and outrage. From X they got a reaction that favored them. In the over all scheme of things Martin Luther King Jr.'s Civil Disobedience was more impressive and adequate than Malcolm X. If Malcolm X had been mentally prepared to take his trip to Mecca and gain the same understanding from the beginning the question posed would have been a bit more challenging.

Week 03 (part 2)
In the College Education Survey two questions were asked to all the participants: "What race do you consider your self; 'White,' 'African American,' 'Asian,' 'Hispanic,' 'Native American,' 'Pacific Islander,' or 'Other' ?" and "Did your parents graduate High School?". The races were abbreviated into W, AA, A, H, NA, PI, or O. If either the mother or the father graduated a Y was put next to a box that indicated the child's race, N was put if neither parent did. All of the Y's were then asked "Did they graduate College?".
Out of eleven Whites all eleven graduated high school and nine graduated College.
Hispanics, the race equally found to survey, had 9 High School graduates and only four College graduates.
For both Asian and African American two were questioned. All four graduated High School while no African Americans graduated College and only one Asian did.
With only one "Other" there was no College graduates but one did finish High School.
No Native Americans, or Pacific Islanders were found.
I infer that Whites still predominately have a higher education than other races.
A comment I noticed while doing the survey was "My mom did but my dad didn't." In relation to our class discussions and previously obtained knowledge that comment really shocked me. Out of the High School graduates that also went to College both parents finished High School but over half of the ones that earned a College degree were females. The Y's only in High School were just about evenly split, mom yes but dad no, or vise versa.
I feel like the results were not very accurate. The people questioned were selected according to the classes I have. If I had any remedial or all Advance Placement classes then my results would of been different, both in the graduates and race. In the 2000's there are more multiracial or "mixed" kids than the 50's or 60's, especially living in Florida.

Week 03 (Part one)
Based on the testing results of the third graders in "A Class Divided" I would have to say that I don't believe the ideology of meritocracy, but that's not solely based on the results. When one group, blue eyes or brown eyes, was told they were the better smarter people and the other group was made to feel inferior, the "inferior" eye colored children earned lower test scores.
Meritocracy says "progress is based on ability...rather than class." But what is ability? I believe that your "ability" to do things comes from your surroundings. Your surroundings are encouraged by theirs. And theirs by theirs and so on and so forth, eventually coming back to you and what you've keep and disregarded from all your exposures. So when your told from a young age that "you can do it" you'll most likely believe it the same amount as the person saying it. The person telling you that either truly believes it, some what does, or not at all. But they've said it because of what they've seen.
If the King of England ever said "you can do anything you set your mind to" to his kids he probably believes it a lot more than a peasant worker living in the slums of Bombay, India saying it to his own kids. If the scenario were changed and the King says it to a young boy he's meet and the worker says it to the same young boy, the young boy would believe it more from the King than the worker. The young boy, like other people can see the credibility and feel the confidence in the speaker.
Because of the never ending circle of surroundings unless you have worked hard for generations on excluding yourself and children from the circle you'll always base your ability on class. And your class on your ability, they build off each other. The two words and their meanings correlate. You cant have one without the other which makes "the circle of surroundings" fit into another even bigger circle.
I dont believe progress is based on ability rather than class because your ability is created by your class and your class is created by your abilty.

Week 02 (part 2)

I picked this ad because I feel its targeting mostly only males. It could also attract females that want their sons to be more "manly." when I saw the Ad it made me ask "why cant daughters learn to shoot with safer air fire?" Is also as if they put a little girl in a small part of the ad in a condescending way. The little girl was more like look your a party of it but not really. Also the little girl isn't alone, they of course put a boy right next to her. Kind of like a "calm down boys shes just on here for show" because if you look with detail at the picture the boys gun is infront of the girls. As well as the color of the boy's clothes is red saying Bam I'm here while the girls is a soft yellow blending her in. I feel like this ad has hidden aspects to it that your subconsciously picking up. For example the "Your Boy" also in red and big letters. Anther one is the father passing down the gun to the son; why not the mother passing the gun down to her daughter? The name its self is like a slap in the face because a daisy is a flower, delicate and soft, along with a girls name, the title says "..with the safer daisy air rifle"
Week 02
Jimmy's Home
"Honey!" says Ma to Pa after a hard day at work at the dinner, "tomorrow is the big day!" Pa, with a big smile on his face, walks towards Ma and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
"I know sweetie, I've missed our boy too" Pa says as he hugs Ma. "But its getting awfully late and we both still have to go to work in the morning so lets try to go to bed." Ma changes into her night gown as Pa brushes his teeth getting ready to head off into bed.
After an almost sleepless night Ma wakes up and fixes Pa some breakfast. Coming down the stairs already dressed for work Pa sits down and enjoys his meal. "Don't worry about my lunch sweetie, you go ahead and sit down here with me and relax some," Pa insisted to Ma. Reluctantly Ma sat down. Holding hands Pa finishes his eggs and bacon, gives Ma an understanding look, and lets go of her hand. Without a word Ma stands up, pushes in her chair, and grabs the plate. Pa by now already at the phone in the living room begins dialing a number when suddenly the phone rang. At the sink, Ma pensively washes the dishes. Over the sound of the running water Ma doesn't hear the phone ring. Even so, maybe if the water wasn't running Ma still wouldn't of notice. She was so lost in her thoughts.
See recently with the news of her only son Jimmy being able to come back home from war she's been more scared than ever something bad might happen. Everybody has noticed but nobody has said anything. Jimmy is that kind of kid that grows on you. Always a smile on his face. That boy could sure get himself into trouble sometimes but finding a way out, he always did. Real gentlemen too, ever since most folks can remember. Jimmy as an only child still was like a brother to the town kids. The people of Lawrence, a small town in Bogotukcy about an hour away from Allen Town in Pennsylvania, are close. Every one's looked froward to his return.
In another Lawrence home a block down and three houses over from Ma and Pa, Bill is putting on his uniform. Bill is the town sheriff. Not too deep of problems ever arise in the town and Bill likes his donuts so he's got a little extra weight on him. Finishing tying his shoes he hears a knock at the door. Its Dicky and Ricky. Ricky's most fond of Jimmy out of all the town kids. Jimmy thought him how to read and play ball so he wouldn't get pick on at school. Dicky has been following Ricky around since he and his mother moved into the town. Dicky likes to help Ricky out and most of all play with him. He hangs on every word Ricky says the same way Ricky does Jimmy.
"Good morning sheriff Litwitz" both kids say in unison. "I was talking to my mom last night about Jimmy and well Sir I've decided I want to do something extra special for him" Ricky said. "Ya know, seeing how he's been extra special with me and all."
"And whats this special thing?" asked the Sheriff.
"I'm not sure myself yet Sir, I wanna see how much money I can gather up." "Maybe enough to buy him a Coke," Ricky responded. Having woken up in a joyous mood Bill offers Dicky and Ricky a deal.
"If you boys wash my car I'll take you into work with me at the station and we can think a little harder on what to do." Without hesitation both boys agreed.
Meanwhile back at Ma and Pa's house Pa finished talking on the phone and went to go give Ma a kiss good-bye before leaving for work. Feeling Pa's cool lips against her cheek brought her back from her nostalgic thoughts of her young boy.
"You wouldn't mind me taking you to the dinner, would you?" "That was Mark on the phone just now and his wife's car broke down." "Good thing it happened before she got on the highway." "Since Nik has his car and is out of town, I figured I could give you both a ride." "You and her haven't had the time to talk like yous use to." "Miss Betty's Bop Shop isn't too far off from the dinner." Pa said to Ma. Ma already somewhat distracted just nodded her head yes and put away the last dish. "Mark's back has been hurting so I'll drive my car over to their house that way he doesn't have to ride his bike," Pa added.
"Okay honey, I'll drive over at the same time so you don't have to walk back" Ma said to Pa as he went searching for the car keys. Mark and his family live two streets over from Bill.
Ricky and Dicky cleaned the car the best they could. Bill grabbed his new Sheriff hat and headed out the door. "Sir," in a high pitch voice little Dicky says. "Can we stop by my house and tell my mom about the deal so she isn't worried about me?" he asked.
"Sure Dicky, but first we've got to pick Joe up" Bill told Dicky. Joe is an old friend of Bill and watched Jimmy grow up. Joe practically took Pa in as his own after his dad died in World War One and mom got deported back to Germany. Although Pa was an older teen at the time he still needed a father figure. Joe owns the town mechanic shop where Mark and Pa work. Jimmy would go help his dad at work after school or whenever he wasn't coaching Y-11 baseball. Being elderly it isn't safe fro him to drive anymore.
During the day work gets done but everybody is mostly just waiting for Pa to go pick Jimmy up at the train station. Dicky's mom didn't mind and Joe got picked up. Mark is at the shop fixing the transition on his wife's car. Bill and the boys driving around town killing time. They've forgotten to talk about ideas for "the special thing". Pa not to long ago arriving at work from dropping off the girls.
Approaching the hour Ma calls Pa at work to tell him that she can't go with him. "Its been so long Pa" a tear rolling down her face as she says the words over the phone, "but today is a busy day and no one can leave early." Ma hangs up and goes to clean off a table now with just empty plates. Pretty soon the tears start to stream thinking of the last time she cleaned up after her son.
Then the moment came. Pa left the mechanic shop ten minutes early eagerly anticipating the arrival of his only son. Bill, Joe, Ricky, and Dicky on there way to the mechanic shop.
At the station Pa sees Jimmy getting off. Jimmy calls out to him with excitement, "PA!" With a hug like you've never seen before Pa embraces him rapping him tightly in his arms. Its was almost as if Pa was trying to make up for all the hugs Ma and him had missed for the past year and a half.
Jimmy and Pa have their special bond in the car. Just enough time for each other alone with looks that said just as much as words. Not everything needed to be said.
Like teenage girls at a slummer party once at the mechanics all the boys gathered around Jimmy. Glad he was home safe and interested in catching up they all intently payed attention to him.
At last, Jimmy's returned.
