Week 04 (part 2)

I am an African American
I wonder what lies ahead for Us
I hear their hurtful comments but don't respond
I see enraged faces
I want to no longer wait for my dream to be the reality
I am an African America

I pretend I'm not sacred
I feel pain, physically and emotionally
I need respect
I worry for the future generations
I cry a silent cry
I am an African American

I don't understand why we are hated so
I believe We are fighting for a worthy cause that Will effect change
I dream of equality
I try to not feel anger
I hope our voices will be heard
I am an African American

Week 04 (part 1)

I believe that Martin Luther King Jr.'s methodology was more effective in accomplishing goals set by the Civil Rights Movement. At the commence both Malcolm X and MLK had different ways of handling problems. To me the over all goal of the Civil Rights Movement was to achieve equality by ending end segregation. At first I feel like Malcolm X didn't have that goal in mind. Malcolm X was more for an advocate for black supremacy. From what we talked about in class it wasn't until his trip to Mecca that he became pro equality. Malcolm X was a very smart man and tactful but way more violent before Mecca. On the other hand, MLK from the start wanted equality. Although giving a hug to the one that kicks you down may be difficult, from personal experience it works very well in helping you reach the goal in a bigger picture.
I feel like MLK rarely let the pro-segregationist have a win, big or small. While X let them have that small victory by fighting back with violence and outrage. From X they got a reaction that favored them. In the over all scheme of things Martin Luther King Jr.'s Civil Disobedience was more impressive and adequate than Malcolm X. If Malcolm X had been mentally prepared to take his trip to Mecca and gain the same understanding from the beginning the question posed would have been a bit more challenging.

Week 03 (part 2)

In the College Education Survey two questions were asked to all the participants: "What race do you consider your self; 'White,' 'African American,' 'Asian,' 'Hispanic,' 'Native American,' 'Pacific Islander,' or 'Other' ?" and "Did your parents graduate High School?". The races were abbreviated into W, AA, A, H, NA, PI, or O. If either the mother or the father graduated a Y was put next to a box that indicated the child's race, N was put if neither parent did. All of the Y's were then asked "Did they graduate College?".

Out of eleven Whites all eleven graduated high school and nine graduated College.
Hispanics, the race equally found to survey, had 9 High School graduates and only four College graduates.
For both Asian and African American two were questioned. All four graduated High School while no African Americans graduated College and only one Asian did.
With only one "Other" there was no College graduates but one did finish High School.
No Native Americans, or Pacific Islanders were found.

I infer that Whites still predominately have a higher education than other races.

A comment I noticed while doing the survey was "My mom did but my dad didn't." In relation to our class discussions and previously obtained knowledge that comment really shocked me. Out of the High School graduates that also went to College both parents finished High School but over half of the ones that earned a College degree were females. The Y's only in High School were just about evenly split, mom yes but dad no, or vise versa.

I feel like the results were not very accurate. The people questioned were selected according to the classes I have. If I had any remedial or all Advance Placement classes then my results would of been different, both in the graduates and race. In the 2000's there are more multiracial or "mixed" kids than the 50's or 60's, especially living in Florida.

Week 03 (Part one)

Based on the testing results of the third graders in "A Class Divided" I would have to say that I don't believe the ideology of meritocracy, but that's not solely based on the results. When one group, blue eyes or brown eyes, was told they were the better smarter people and the other group was made to feel inferior, the "inferior" eye colored children earned lower test scores.
Meritocracy says "progress is based on ability...rather than class." But what is ability? I believe that your "ability" to do things comes from your surroundings. Your surroundings are encouraged by theirs. And theirs by theirs and so on and so forth, eventually coming back to you and what you've keep and disregarded from all your exposures. So when your told from a young age that "you can do it" you'll most likely believe it the same amount as the person saying it. The person telling you that either truly believes it, some what does, or not at all. But they've said it because of what they've seen.
If the King of England ever said "you can do anything you set your mind to" to his kids he probably believes it a lot more than a peasant worker living in the slums of Bombay, India saying it to his own kids. If the scenario were changed and the King says it to a young boy he's meet and the worker says it to the same young boy, the young boy would believe it more from the King than the worker. The young boy, like other people can see the credibility and feel the confidence in the speaker.
Because of the never ending circle of surroundings unless you have worked hard for generations on excluding yourself and children from the circle you'll always base your ability on class. And your class on your ability, they build off each other. The two words and their meanings correlate. You cant have one without the other which makes "the circle of surroundings" fit into another even bigger circle.
I dont believe progress is based on ability rather than class because your ability is created by your class and your class is created by your abilty.

Week 02 (part 2)

I picked this ad because I feel its targeting mostly only males. It could also attract females that want their sons to be more "manly." when I saw the Ad it made me ask "why cant daughters learn to shoot with safer air fire?" Is also as if they put a little girl in a small part of the ad in a condescending way. The little girl was more like look your a party of it but not really. Also the little girl isn't alone, they of course put a boy right next to her. Kind of like a "calm down boys shes just on here for show" because if you look with detail at the picture the boys gun is infront of the girls. As well as the color of the boy's clothes is red saying Bam I'm here while the girls is a soft yellow blending her in. I feel like this ad has hidden aspects to it that your subconsciously picking up. For example the "Your Boy" also in red and big letters. Anther one is the father passing down the gun to the son; why not the mother passing the gun down to her daughter? The name its self is like a slap in the face because a daisy is a flower, delicate and soft, along with a girls name, the title says "..with the safer daisy air rifle"

Week 02

Jimmy's Home

"Honey!" says Ma to Pa after a hard day at work at the dinner, "tomorrow is the big day!" Pa, with a big smile on his face, walks towards Ma and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
"I know sweetie, I've missed our boy too" Pa says as he hugs Ma. "But its getting awfully late and we both still have to go to work in the morning so lets try to go to bed." Ma changes into her night gown as Pa brushes his teeth getting ready to head off into bed.
After an almost sleepless night Ma wakes up and fixes Pa some breakfast. Coming down the stairs already dressed for work Pa sits down and enjoys his meal. "Don't worry about my lunch sweetie, you go ahead and sit down here with me and relax some," Pa insisted to Ma. Reluctantly Ma sat down. Holding hands Pa finishes his eggs and bacon, gives Ma an understanding look, and lets go of her hand. Without a word Ma stands up, pushes in her chair, and grabs the plate. Pa by now already at the phone in the living room begins dialing a number when suddenly the phone rang. At the sink, Ma pensively washes the dishes. Over the sound of the running water Ma doesn't hear the phone ring. Even so, maybe if the water wasn't running Ma still wouldn't of notice. She was so lost in her thoughts.
See recently with the news of her only son Jimmy being able to come back home from war she's been more scared than ever something bad might happen. Everybody has noticed but nobody has said anything. Jimmy is that kind of kid that grows on you. Always a smile on his face. That boy could sure get himself into trouble sometimes but finding a way out, he always did. Real gentlemen too, ever since most folks can remember. Jimmy as an only child still was like a brother to the town kids. The people of Lawrence, a small town in Bogotukcy about an hour away from Allen Town in Pennsylvania, are close. Every one's looked froward to his return.
In another Lawrence home a block down and three houses over from Ma and Pa, Bill is putting on his uniform. Bill is the town sheriff. Not too deep of problems ever arise in the town and Bill likes his donuts so he's got a little extra weight on him. Finishing tying his shoes he hears a knock at the door. Its Dicky and Ricky. Ricky's most fond of Jimmy out of all the town kids. Jimmy thought him how to read and play ball so he wouldn't get pick on at school. Dicky has been following Ricky around since he and his mother moved into the town. Dicky likes to help Ricky out and most of all play with him. He hangs on every word Ricky says the same way Ricky does Jimmy.
"Good morning sheriff Litwitz" both kids say in unison. "I was talking to my mom last night about Jimmy and well Sir I've decided I want to do something extra special for him" Ricky said. "Ya know, seeing how he's been extra special with me and all."
"And whats this special thing?" asked the Sheriff.
"I'm not sure myself yet Sir, I wanna see how much money I can gather up." "Maybe enough to buy him a Coke," Ricky responded. Having woken up in a joyous mood Bill offers Dicky and Ricky a deal.
"If you boys wash my car I'll take you into work with me at the station and we can think a little harder on what to do." Without hesitation both boys agreed.
Meanwhile back at Ma and Pa's house Pa finished talking on the phone and went to go give Ma a kiss good-bye before leaving for work. Feeling Pa's cool lips against her cheek brought her back from her nostalgic thoughts of her young boy.
"You wouldn't mind me taking you to the dinner, would you?" "That was Mark on the phone just now and his wife's car broke down." "Good thing it happened before she got on the highway." "Since Nik has his car and is out of town, I figured I could give you both a ride." "You and her haven't had the time to talk like yous use to." "Miss Betty's Bop Shop isn't too far off from the dinner." Pa said to Ma. Ma already somewhat distracted just nodded her head yes and put away the last dish. "Mark's back has been hurting so I'll drive my car over to their house that way he doesn't have to ride his bike," Pa added.
"Okay honey, I'll drive over at the same time so you don't have to walk back" Ma said to Pa as he went searching for the car keys. Mark and his family live two streets over from Bill.
Ricky and Dicky cleaned the car the best they could. Bill grabbed his new Sheriff hat and headed out the door. "Sir," in a high pitch voice little Dicky says. "Can we stop by my house and tell my mom about the deal so she isn't worried about me?" he asked.
"Sure Dicky, but first we've got to pick Joe up" Bill told Dicky. Joe is an old friend of Bill and watched Jimmy grow up. Joe practically took Pa in as his own after his dad died in World War One and mom got deported back to Germany. Although Pa was an older teen at the time he still needed a father figure. Joe owns the town mechanic shop where Mark and Pa work. Jimmy would go help his dad at work after school or whenever he wasn't coaching Y-11 baseball. Being elderly it isn't safe fro him to drive anymore.
During the day work gets done but everybody is mostly just waiting for Pa to go pick Jimmy up at the train station. Dicky's mom didn't mind and Joe got picked up. Mark is at the shop fixing the transition on his wife's car. Bill and the boys driving around town killing time. They've forgotten to talk about ideas for "the special thing". Pa not to long ago arriving at work from dropping off the girls.
Approaching the hour Ma calls Pa at work to tell him that she can't go with him. "Its been so long Pa" a tear rolling down her face as she says the words over the phone, "but today is a busy day and no one can leave early." Ma hangs up and goes to clean off a table now with just empty plates. Pretty soon the tears start to stream thinking of the last time she cleaned up after her son.
Then the moment came. Pa left the mechanic shop ten minutes early eagerly anticipating the arrival of his only son. Bill, Joe, Ricky, and Dicky on there way to the mechanic shop.
At the station Pa sees Jimmy getting off. Jimmy calls out to him with excitement, "PA!" With a hug like you've never seen before Pa embraces him rapping him tightly in his arms. Its was almost as if Pa was trying to make up for all the hugs Ma and him had missed for the past year and a half.
Jimmy and Pa have their special bond in the car. Just enough time for each other alone with looks that said just as much as words. Not everything needed to be said.
Like teenage girls at a slummer party once at the mechanics all the boys gathered around Jimmy. Glad he was home safe and interested in catching up they all intently payed attention to him.
At last, Jimmy's returned.

Week 08 Dailies

Topic 09 Concept Guide

Role of Women during WWII- The first time women were on base, they worked as nurses. Back in the home front they took over the jobs of the men since most of them where off at war. Some raised their kids alone being single mothers.

Cause and Effect of Use of the Atomic Bomb- U.S. scientist playing around looking to see how they can make a bomb more effective. U.S. used land that was mostly empty to test the bombs out, ruining the land. Once they knew they worked they wanted to get the point across to the Japanese that they aren't playing around and that they should give up because the U.S. will do whatever it takes to win. One of the two bombs killed 90,000 (Hiroshima) people, while the second bomb killed 70,000 (Nagasaki), both destroying land in the process, with out counting deaths later on caused by the radiation left by the bombs. Japan gave up after second bomb, good thing for the U.S. because at the time they only had two. Seeing the devastation caused by the Atomic Bomb some nations made a pact to not use theirs and U.S. said that they would stop the manufacturing along with trying them out to see if they work after the thermo-something other bomb.

U.S. Foreign Policy Before, During, and After the War- Before: not really planning on any wars starting up but if so not ready to get into them; not picking sides. During: still not wanting to get into the war but gave Brittan some ships to help them out while using the cover of "the Land-Leasing Act" that benefited the U.S. anyways; after the Bombing of Pearl Harbor nation became pro-war and fought with Allies. After: help Europe with trying to restore itself after all the disaster

Effects of the War on Europe- Liberated them but left a lot of damage emotionally and physically

Effect of Pearl Harbor Attack- President FDR gives spech and Congress decides to declair war on Japan--> Germany declairs war on U.S.-->the Japanese Internment--> Korematsu vs. U.S. Federal Government

Japanese Internment- in the 1940s all American Japanese living in the West Coast (aka: Exclustion Area) had to move and were militaryly escorted into jail like places, if did not move willingly in a time period given, because the U.S. Federal Government felt that they posed a danger to the State by being Japanese---> the U.S. Fed. Govt. was tried by Korematsu and the trial went all the way to the Supreme Court, Korematsu argued that it was against his Constitutional Rights to have to sell all his belongings and move into jail but the court ruled in favor of the U.S. Fed. Govt. stating that the Federal Government had the right to take any action against any type of Japanese because they felt they were a "clear and present danger".....years later after the war a "sorry" was said to the Japanese that were directly affected by getting twenty thousand dollars

Neutrality Acts- in 1937 goal of the two sets of Laws being to prevent the U.S. becoming involved in conflict. 1) Embargo on arms sales stopped for countries at war 2)U.S. battle ships can't be armed 3) Americans can't travel on ships of countries that are at war

Purpose of Propaganda- encourage non-pro-war citizens to become pro-war by pointing out the bad things going on and say that "WE" can win and that "WE" need "YOU" along with encouraging them to save save save that way the U.S. military can have more resources

Rationing- telling Americans to cut back and save; only get what they need....limited proportions trying to save on things like fuel so the troops can have more of them

Results of World War Two- Changed the future. Europe: no more Hitler and very few of the "Master Race" around to kill more, land hurting badly (destruction and debt), freeing land from the Nazi party. U.S.: economic boost, women lost their jobs they held during the war, unity as a nation, more suburban living, baby boom that still affects us today. Japan: massive amounts of deaths along with land destroyed for longer periods of times due to radiation from the atomic bombs

Week 06

1. On EBay I found a picture of a toy knife with a brass knuckle handle for sale that peaked my interest because I actually got to not only see but hold a real one. I was first amazed by it in 10Th grade when I had the chance to sing the French National Anthem near a tent that helped recreate a base on D-day. A good friend of mine had the role of a US solider and happened to need assistance getting ready. He asked me to hand him some props, the knife being one of them.
Because of the fact that I had to get ready to sing I didn't get the chance to see where he put the knife. On the second day of the reenactment I saw that he strapped the knife onto the outside of his boot, which to me made the knife cooler.
Using Google I found a picture that resembles the original one I held. Along with the picture I also found out that the knife was used during World War One and can still be seen today. The blades can differ in shape and size as well as the brass knuckles. The knife was used for defense, cutting down smallish things in your way, and part of a sneak tactic.

Bernard (Green) Greenspan
Born: Rozwadow, Poland March 6, 1911
1)As a Polish citizen, while Hitler came into power, did you ever think that he would succeed in capturing and taking over not just land but the minds of so many people through convincing them that Jews where the problem?
2)With your father fighting in WW1, when you got recruited into the Polish army was your father proud or did he not push for you going into the army and rather preferred you working on the farm?
3)Where you, or anyone in your family, happy to see the Germans? If so, when did you realise Hitler wasn't what you thought he was?
4)How impacting was it to see the Jews being carried in trucks to bushes that had hidden machine-guns and then hear the cross-fire while wondering if any were still alive when the shooting was over? How long did it take it for you to realise what was happening and how did you find out?
5)After Hilter died why did you stay in Poland and then move to the United States after moving to Israel?

Week 05

Dear Principal,

It has come to my attention that lamentably certain history is being edited out of classrooms. I feel that at a high school level, this should not be happening whether it is being edited out of textbooks or censored by school boards. Don't half inform us out of fear that the history is too strong, disturbing or controversial.
As a student I go to school to learn. I go to school expecting and trusting that my teachers are giving me precise information. In math, teachers don't half teach equations, but instead shine light on all angles to better our understanding. In my anatomy, english, nor french textbooks do they cut out needed information, yet my history book do? Why? This shouldn't be a Scopes Trail event.
I can not fully grasp a subject, and I doubt fellow classmates can, if the part that impacts is taken out. A history teacher shouldn't have to say "the Rape of Nanking devastated China" and move on, or worse not even mention the genocide. From the very start of our academic carrier we were taught to ask the Five W's; who, what, when, where, and why; however, now as we advance they take them away. To only know that the Chinese and Japanese have a conflict that helps trigger World War Two doesn't do much for me and makes me feel like it must not be important if the teacher is so lightly going over it. A conflict doesn't make me think 300,000 killed and 20,000 raped.
More over, the life of those people that died are being degraded in a way by not talking about it. In 8Th grade a poster I saw a poster that really stuck with me that read "The worst thing we can do is forget." The background was of a little girl with older men faded in a concentration cap. The little girl had every day clothes on but with a the star of David sown on her dress while the older men were just skin and bones with very few clothes on. I agree with the poster, what a down fall it would be to forget the extent of the Holocaust and run the danger of it some day being erased from history. Don't let those deaths along with other acts of genocide not mean anything.
Each time teachers are forced to deny and skip a part of history to their students they are forced to conform and lower standards which then goes into a cycle that only leads to no history at all being taught. As a principal you should encourage classes teaching the subject they are meant to.

Sincerely, Natalia Riveros- Martinez
Student of Celebration High School

Week 04

This picture is an over reaction of the people's expressions when James is paying back the money he was lent. I chose this scene because only for his kids did he swallow his pride and go ask for money and I feel like in this scene James goes back to feeling a little worthier and having some real hope in that things are turning around for the better. Sometimes people do things that to them seems like has no value but to another person it does. The way people looked at him and whispered while he walked up to the teller and gave money back, I think contributes to him feeling prominent and more empowered over his economic situation.

Week 02

1.From the organized crime small group presentations I learned that the gangsters mostly escaped from the cops and had a few good runs but always ended up getting caught and dieing in the end. I also learned that the gangsters crimes got worse as they surrounded themselves with more or daring gangsters. Some of my favorite cool facts where: Bonnie Parker, for example, was married and wrote poetry, Clyde Barrow killed 9 police officers and also dropped out of school in 5Th grade, "Baby Face" Nelson was 5'4 and got made fun of for it, "Pretty Boy" Floyd grew up on a farm, and Kate "Ma" Barker waited until her four sons graduated high school to start a life of crime as a family.

Week 07

By looking at the Wordle for the United States Declaration of War I feel like the tone was a little cocky and of political concerned. I feel like the US thought they were doing the right thing for thier people and not only the nation but for peace within other nations. I think the US was fed up with Germany and thought that if they didnt step up and declare war things would only get worse, more out of control. The word "belligerents" makes me think they didnt think too highly of Germany's government thus not liking Germany as a whole.
Which in turn, I believe, Germany responded in a scrambled way. Being closer to where the action was going on, they were worried about more than just the US. I assume that the scramble lead to the responce being less agressive and pushy. Germany's thoughts were all over the place not really being able to give 100% effort to all of the subjects, because of the fear of leaving one out maybe and feeling like they're all important.

You should treat the detained prisoners how you would any others. On the surface make it look like you haven't done anything bad but the truth being that your treating them worse. Maybe give them a few slaps. Offer them deals to rat out the other people and in return when they go to jail they wont be given as much h*ll as the ones that chose not to rat. Be creative but making sure that nothing you do could back fire on you and your team.
If any of them were to get mistreated and it go out to the public credibility would be lost. Things in the past that were over looked now maybe have to be looked at. Short-term repercussions, the prisoners feel a little uncomfortable. Takes you a little longer to find the other bomb makers because you cant be too rough other wise you might get suspended or worse.

Extra Credit

Place:School Lunchroom
A conversation between old friends after coming back to school from summer brake

BILLY: Hey Bobbie! Its been a while, how do you feel back at school?

BOB: eh, It can be so darb, but it all really depends on the teacher. Like this year my math teacher is the cat's moow, but last year Mr.D gave me the heebie jeebies. Mr.D was always talking about his dogs. Who does that?, maybe if he was the anatomy teacher

BILLY: Yeah I'm glad I've never come across him. What about the big cheese?

BOB: Who? Mr.R?, yeah poor guy. (Billy with a puzzled look) He liked my aunts gams so he dressed all spiffy and asked her to go with him. A couple weeks later Mr.R asked to go steady. I guess she had a crush on him and was diggin' his style so she accepted in a heart beat. Too bad for him now, he's got the handcuffs.

BILLY: And Mr.R being the drugstore cowboy, i guess that's part of gettin' old. Makes me kinda up chuck. Old people in love is definitely not the bee's knees.

BOB: So far things are just berries ,but i can totally feel them turnin' into major fire extinguishers.

Weekly Article 02

In a close to perfect world I would not see a problem with war video games. If while at war, soldiers themselves act as if combat were a game, why shouldn't games that portray war exist? Until those soldiers went out and did their job in a serious way, I wouldn't see a problem with games such as Call of Duty and Gears.
I would argue that the critics questioning the players, the games, the makers, and their morality have no right to say if its offense or not. I would argue that I bet they've never fought in war. That if it doesn't offend the real soldiers the games are trying to portray why should it an average Joe? I might even say that such games help show today's adolescents that war is a bloody dangerously scary situation that only the bravest put themselves in. That they are heroes and should be better respected.
But today's adolescents aren't the only ones playing these games. Its turned into youngens, girls, and even older men obsessing over these games. And with shows like Jersey Shore being such a hit how mature are the customers these days?
Moreover we don't live in a world full of sane people. Not everyone was blessed to have good role models to teach them that video games are just games. That shooting real people should not be fun. Not everyone can differentiate between reality and fiction. Unfortunately it only takes those few insane people to kill many and to give games like Gears a bad rep.
On top people don't understand that young children shouldn't be exposed to violent games. Younger kids look up to their fathers, brothers, sisters etc. and seeing them over react to a loss. Or become addicted to playing those games makes them feel like its the right thing to do. Which in the eyes of most, again gives the right for negative light upon the games.
A major quality for humans is to conform. And future generations see more and more that its OK to be overly aggressive. That if anything I've got to be tough to have power, confusing toughness with violence. Possibly thinking, I've got to learn to play these games and to act this way for me to get my brothers affection. Or, for me to be able to get attention from my boyfriend I need to focus more on these games. Maybe even, to be part of the cool crowd and hold conversations with fellow peers I admire I must first get in touch with these games.
Those in favor of such games might respond in saying: Gears and Call of Duty help keep kids out of the streets and causing trouble by staying home with friends to enjoy their games, that they also relive stress and teach friendly competition.
It's all about how far people take things. Promoting competition can be a good healthy thing but too many times it gives people the feeling like they have to fight for everything. That they have to be defensive because there isn't enough to go around for everyone. Yes, while uniting friends and relieving stress might be true, might not be.
Like an alcoholic, you don't know when you crossed the line from friendly drinking to dependence. How much are these people playing that the stress reliever later turns into a stress creator. How long before 'just hanging with some friends' turns into hey group of friends lets plan on how to later go out and kill?
Another thing is that now technology is so advanced that these games to compete with one another have to have better graphics. Playing a game with better graphics makes it feel more realistic. Its not something the producers can help since it's what the consumers want, but it is not helping the cause. Perhaps if all game makers agreed on making their games be more realistic in the sense that one shot to the head bam your done, not, ten shots later your life power goes down to red meaning your about to die. Never the less that still wouldn't solve all the other problems these violent games cause.
